Amy Clarke’s painterly background has been steeped in her direct response to the land in which she grew up, on a property in south west Queensland and later on, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Having lived in cities for nearly 20 years, she has returned to a rural environment which she is discovering to be her spiritual home. Clarke finds a non-literal translation, as in Elisabeth Cumming’s philosophy of a deep love and respect for the landscape…‘more the spirit of a place’.
“The natural world provides an anchor for me and a sense of peace that I don’t really find anywhere else,” says Amy. “In my painting I guess I use it as a metaphor to express my feelings.”
Amy was awarded an Arts Queensland Career Development Grant for 2009. Career Development Grants assist artists and arts workers to pursue professional development opportunities that hone their craft and expand their horizons at national and international levels.
