Back in Brisbane after being raised along the east coast; Angus Whelan became aware of graffiti in around ninety-two, at the age of seven whilst living in Newcastle. It instantly connected with a young Gus; the freedom of expression, the bravado of its practitioners and primarily, the obvious skill involved. Now, nearly two decades later the self-proclaimed ‘Boho Hobo’ has honed his skills and is Presenting works incorporating a street art background into the contextual setting of modern galleries. Angus is derelict chic embodied. Although stylistically his work can be varied, his use of bold colours and eclectic symbolism is present throughout. As a member of partyism or the drug art movement, discourses from the underground are frequently depicted and referenced. Other underlying themes can be observed across his body of work, in particular the idea of modern tribes and their existence in the suburban environment.
